Advantages:
- Excellent sealing performance. The expeller seal is sealed by hydrodynamic action and belongs to a non-contact seal. Under the rotation of the expeller, air or clean water generates pressure. At the outer edge side of the auxiliary impeller, a gas-slurry or water-slurry balance is formed with the slurry, effectively preventing slurry leakage and performing especially well under working conditions where slurry dilution is not allowed.
- No need for shaft sealing water. When the positive pressure value at the pump inlet is not greater than 10% of the pressure value at the discharge, the slurry pump with expeller seal doesn’t require additional shaft sealing water. This is advantageous in areas with scarce water resources or where stable shaft sealing water is difficult to provide, reducing dependence on external water supply systems and lowering operation complexity and cost.
- Low cost and easy maintenance. Compared with complex sealing forms like mechanical seals, it is more economical. Maintenance aspect: The structure is not complicated, making maintenance operations relatively easy. It requires less time and labor cost for maintenance or component replacement, and general maintenance personnel can operate after simple training, reducing maintenance difficulty and dependence on professional technicians.
4. Can reduce axial force. The expeller can offset part of the axial force, reducing the load on bearings and prolonging their service life.
Disadvantages:
- Relatively large energy consumption. The expeller seal needs to consume additional energy to generate reverse centrifugal force for sealing, resulting in about 3% of the total pump power consumption, increasing operation costs.
- Limited application range. There are requirements for pump inlet positive pressure. When the inlet positive pressure is greater than 10% of the outlet pressure, the sealing effect is greatly reduced.
- There are limitations on the concentration of the transported medium. Generally, it is suitable for slurry with a weight concentration not exceeding 15%.
- High requirements for parking seal and short service life of parking seal. Auxiliary impeller seals usually need to be used with parking seals, but the service life of parking seals is relatively short and requires regular replacement, increasing maintenance workload and cost.
- Strict installation requirements. The installation accuracy of the expeller has a great impact on its sealing performance. Improper installation may lead to poor sealing and even leakage problems, requiring strict operation according to technical requirements during installation.
